App Icon Design in 2026: Adapting to Apple's Liquid Glass and Android's Material 3 Expressive

Why app icon design changed this year

For most of the last decade, an app icon was a single flat PNG: design it once, export a dozen sizes, done. That approach quietly broke in 2026. iOS 26 shipped Liquid Glass, Apple's biggest icon rendering overhaul since the move to flat design in iOS 7, and Android's Material 3 Expressive pushed adaptive, "themed" icons further into the mainstream. If your icon still looks like a static square, it's now rendering incorrectly on a growing share of devices, not just looking dated.

This matters for ASO because the icon is the first creative asset a shopper sees, in search results, in charts, and on the home screen after install. A stale or broken-looking icon depresses tap-through before a user ever reads your title or screenshots. Here's what actually changed, and what to do about it before your next update.

Liquid Glass: icons are now layered, not flat

Apple's Icon Composer tool (bundled with Xcode) replaced the old "export one PNG" workflow with a layered .icon file. Instead of a single flat image, you now build an icon from separate layers, typically a background, one or two midground shapes, and a foreground mark, that the system composites in real time with glass-like specular highlights, subtle depth, and light refraction.

The practical implications for designers and marketers:

Icons need at least two to three visually distinct layers with real depth between them, not a single busy graphic. A logo mark that used to sit on a solid color background now needs that background separated out so the system can add its own light and shadow behind it.

Apple generates light, dark, tinted, and clear variants automatically from your layers, but only if the layers are built correctly. A foreground mark with too much fine detail or thin strokes tends to lose legibility once the system applies the glass effect and generates the tinted (monochrome) variant users can select in Home Screen customization.

Old flat icons still work (iOS renders them inside a glass "frame" automatically), but they look visibly behind the icons of apps that adopted Icon Composer. In a search results grid or a Top Charts list, that difference is the kind of thing users register subconsciously even if they can't name it.

If you haven't opened Icon Composer yet, budget time for it before your next major release. Rebuilding an icon as layers is a design task, not just an export setting, and it's easiest to do at the same time as any broader icon refresh rather than as a rushed afterthought right before submission.

Android's answer: adaptive and themed icons are no longer optional

Google's Material 3 Expressive guidelines, now standard across Android 16 devices, extend the adaptive icon system that's existed since Android 8: a separate background and foreground layer, plus a monochrome layer that Android uses to generate a themed icon matching the user's wallpaper-based color palette. Devices that ship with theming enabled by default (most modern Android skins) will render your icon in the phone's accent color unless you supply that monochrome layer, and a poorly drawn one can turn a recognizable logo into an unrecognizable blob once it's rendered as a single flat color.

The same rule from iOS applies here in reverse: icons that were designed as one flat image with no layer separation render fine in the app drawer but look inconsistent in themed launchers, which are increasingly the default rather than an opt-in.

The core design rules haven't changed, they've gotten stricter

Layering and theming are new mechanics, but they sit on top of the same fundamentals that have always separated icons that convert from icons that don't:

Simplicity wins under compression. Your icon renders as small as 40x40 pixels in search results before a user ever sees the full-size version. One shape or mark, high contrast, no fine text, no gradients so busy they turn to mud at thumbnail size.

Avoid literal screenshots or UI chrome as the icon. It's against both Apple's and Google's current guidelines and it also just doesn't read well at small sizes.

Test on a real device grid, not a design mockup. An icon that looks great alone in Figma can disappear next to five other apps with similar colors on an actual home screen. Pull up the top 10 apps in your category and place your icon next to them before finalizing.

Don't redesign the icon in isolation from your screenshots and preview video. Apple's App Store algorithm and human editorial reviewers both weigh visual consistency across your whole product page; an icon that doesn't match your screenshot color palette or app style reads as unpolished even if each asset is well made individually.

Keep a seasonal or promotional variant ready, but scoped. Apple allows alternate app icons that users can select in-app, and seasonal icon updates (holiday themes, milestone launches) have measurably lifted re-engagement for some apps. Just make sure any alternate icon still follows the same layering rules so it doesn't look broken in Liquid Glass.

A practical icon checklist for 2026

Before you ship your next icon update, confirm you have: a layered source file (not just a flattened PNG) so it renders correctly under Liquid Glass; a dedicated monochrome layer for Android theming; legibility tested at 40x40px and at full size; visual consistency with your current screenshots and preview video; and light, dark, and tinted variants previewed, not just assumed to look fine.
