App marketing tools built by developers who've shipped 20+ apps to the App Store and Google Play.
Icon sizing looks like a solved problem until you are staring at an Xcode asset catalog with a dozen empty slots, or a Play Console warning about your adaptive icon, at the point where you expected to be shipping.
This is the complete reference: every size iOS and Android use in 2026, what each one is for, the format rules that cause rejections, and the safe-zone maths for adaptive icons. Bookmark it, or use our free icon size previewer to drop in an icon and see it rendered at every size instantly.
The Quick Answer
- Design once at 1024 by 1024, square, no transparency, no rounded corners, in sRGB.
- iOS needs that 1024 for the App Store plus home screen, Spotlight, Settings and notification sizes down to 40 pixels.
- Android needs 512 by 512 for the Play listing plus launcher icons at 192, 144, 96, 72 and 48, ideally as an adaptive icon with separate foreground and background layers.
- Modern toolchains can generate the smaller sizes from a single source, but you should still check the small end by eye. Automatic downscaling frequently produces something illegible.
Every iOS Icon Size
iOS sizes are expressed in points multiplied by a scale factor. A 60 point icon is 120 pixels at 2x and 180 pixels at 3x. These are the pixel dimensions you actually export.
| Pixels | Points and scale | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| 1024 × 1024 | 1x | App Store listing and marketing |
| 180 × 180 | 60pt @3x | iPhone home screen, 3x devices |
| 120 × 120 | 60pt @2x | iPhone home screen, 2x devices |
| 167 × 167 | 83.5pt @2x | iPad Pro home screen |
| 152 × 152 | 76pt @2x | iPad home screen |
| 120 × 120 | 40pt @3x | Spotlight search, 3x devices |
| 80 × 80 | 40pt @2x | Spotlight search, 2x devices |
| 87 × 87 | 29pt @3x | Settings, 3x devices |
| 58 × 58 | 29pt @2x | Settings, 2x devices |
| 60 × 60 | 20pt @3x | Notifications, 3x devices |
| 40 × 40 | 20pt @2x | Notifications, 2x devices |
Note that 120 appears twice, once as the 2x home screen icon and once as the 3x Spotlight icon. They are the same pixel dimensions serving different roles, which is why size lists sometimes appear to have duplicates.
Modern Xcode projects accept a single 1024 pixel image and generate the rest, which is the recommended path. You still need the 1024 to be perfect, because everything derives from it.
Every Android Icon Size
Android sizes follow density buckets. The baseline is mdpi at 48 pixels for a 48dp icon, and each bucket scales from there.
| Pixels | Density bucket | Scale | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|---|
| 512 × 512 | Play Store | 1x | Google Play listing. 32-bit PNG |
| 192 × 192 | xxxhdpi | 4x | Launcher on the highest density screens |
| 144 × 144 | xxhdpi | 3x | Launcher on most flagships |
| 96 × 96 | xhdpi | 2x | Launcher on mid-range devices |
| 72 × 72 | hdpi | 1.5x | Launcher on older devices |
| 48 × 48 | mdpi | 1x baseline | Launcher, baseline density |
The Play Store icon at 512 is separate from anything in your APK or bundle. It is uploaded in Play Console and is what users see while browsing, so it deserves the same care as the iOS 1024.
Android Adaptive Icons and the Safe Zone
This is where most cross-platform icons break. Android does not display your icon as you drew it. It composites a foreground layer over a background layer, then applies a mask whose shape depends on the launcher: circle, squircle, rounded square, or something the manufacturer invented.
The geometry that matters:
- Each layer is 108dp square. At xxxhdpi that is 432 pixels.
- Only the central 72dp is guaranteed visible. That is the safe zone, 288 pixels at xxxhdpi.
- The outer 18dp on each side can be cropped by the mask, and is also used for parallax and other launcher effects.
In practice: keep your logo, symbol or any text well inside the middle two thirds. Let the background layer be a flat colour or simple gradient that fills the whole 108dp so no mask shape reveals an edge. If you designed a square icon with artwork reaching the corners, expect a circular mask to eat those corners.
A quick sanity check: draw a circle inscribed in your icon. Anything outside that circle may be invisible on some devices. If losing it changes what the icon means, redesign.
Format Rules That Cause Rejections
- No alpha channel on the iOS App Store icon. It must be fully opaque. This is the most common technical failure, and design tools introduce transparency silently when a layer does not cover the full canvas. Flatten onto an opaque background before exporting.
- No pre-baked rounded corners. Both platforms mask. Rounding first produces a double-rounded shape with visible pale corners.
- Square aspect ratio, exactly. A 1024 by 1020 image fails.
- PNG, sRGB. Wide-gamut profiles can shift colour between your design tool and the device. Convert to sRGB before export.
- No transparency in the Play Store 512 icon either. Play expects a 32-bit PNG, and transparent regions render unpredictably against the store background.
- Do not upscale. Export each size from the vector or the 1024 master, never from a smaller raster.
For the content rules, such as imitating system apps or including trademarks you do not own, see our breakdown of the most common listing rejections.
Designing for 40 Pixels, Not 1024
Almost every weak icon is designed at full size and never checked small. The 1024 version is seen once, when someone browses your store page. The 40 to 120 pixel versions are seen every day.
What survives downscaling:
- One focal shape. Two competing elements become a blur.
- Thick strokes. A 4 pixel line at 1024 is a half pixel at 120. It disappears.
- High contrast between subject and background. Tonal, low-contrast designs turn into a single flat colour.
- Generous padding. Artwork crammed to the edges reads as a coloured square.
- Flat or simple gradients. Photographic texture and fine noise become mud.
What fails: text of any kind, thin outlines, small detail, subtle shadows, and anything requiring the viewer to look closely. Test by putting your icon at 40 pixels beside the four apps you compete with in search. If yours is the one you cannot pick out, the problem is the design, not the export. Our icon design guide covers the fixes in depth.
A Workflow That Produces the Whole Set
- Design at 1024 square, vector where possible, on an opaque background, with the key shape inside the central two thirds so it survives the Android mask.
- Check at 40, 60 and 120 pixels before doing anything else. Fix legibility now, not after you have generated twenty files.
- Export the iOS master at 1024, flattened, sRGB, no alpha. Let Xcode derive the rest from it.
- Build the Android adaptive icon as two layers: a foreground with transparency and a background that fills the full 108dp.
- Export the Play Store icon at 512 as an opaque 32-bit PNG.
- Verify on device against light and dark wallpapers and in a folder, where icons render smallest.
If you would rather not do the export pass by hand, our icon previewer shows an icon at every size for free, and WhixFrame's generator produces the complete iOS and Android set as a ZIP.
Every Icon Size, Generated and Exported
Design directions rendered at 1024 with the store format rules already applied, then exported across all iOS sizes and Android densities as a single ZIP. Three free generations, no credit card.

- Google Play feature graphic, 1024 by 500. Required for every Play listing. Keep text away from the edges, since it is cropped in some placements.
- watchOS icons, if you ship a watch app, follow their own smaller size ladder.
- Notification and small-widget icons may need simplified monochrome variants.
- Favicon and social preview for your landing page. Reusing the app icon keeps recognition consistent between your site and the store.
Screenshot dimensions are a separate reference entirely, covered in the screenshot size guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size should an app icon be?
Design at 1024 by 1024. That is the iOS App Store size and everything smaller derives from it. Google Play uses 512 by 512 for the listing icon, with launcher icons from 192 down to 48 across the density buckets.
Can an app icon have transparency?
The iOS App Store icon cannot, and an alpha channel will be refused at upload. Android adaptive icon foreground layers are expected to have transparency, because the system composites them over your background layer.
Should I round the corners myself?
No. Submit a square with artwork to the edges. Both platforms apply their own mask, and pre-rounding produces a double-rounded shape with pale corner artefacts.
Do I need every size individually?
Not usually. Xcode generates iOS sizes from a single 1024 source and Android tooling handles density buckets from your adaptive layers. You do still need to review the small sizes visually, because automatic downscaling often produces something unreadable.
